Visa Information

Visa Requirements

Anyone wanting to enter Australia must carry a valid passport and everyone, except holders of Australian and New Zealand passports, requires a visa to enter Australia.

People seeking to attend, or participate in, a conference in Australia should, in most cases, apply for a short stay business visitor visa (subclass 456).

Those who are able to obtain an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) may obtain either a short or long-validity short-stay business ETA.

For more information on the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs' Electronic Travel Authority system, see Fact Sheet 55 - The Electronic Travel Authority or visit www.immi.gov.au/eta/ on the Department's web site.

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)

All travellers to Australia, other than Australian and New Zealand citizens, are legally required to hold a valid visa to travel to Australia.

Australia's Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) system is the world's most advanced and streamlined travel authorisation system.

A recent innovative enhancement to ETA arrangements allows a traveller to apply for an ETA over the Internet.

The ETA is an electronically-stored authority for travel to Australia for a short-term tourist or business entry. It replaces the visa label or stamp in a passport and removes the need for application forms.

ETAs are issued within seconds of being requested through computer links between the department, travel agents, airlines and specialist service providers around the world.
