With an
Australian Emissions Trading Scheme to be introduced later this
year, many Australian companies will have a legal obligation to
reduce their greenhouse emissions. However, despite this,
voluntary carbon markets are growing rapidly and are predicted to
expand further. For many companies with no legal obligation
to reduce their emissions, there remains a corporate incentive to
take voluntary action to manage their emissions. For some
this means setting a carbon reduction target, while for others this
means heading down a path towards Carbon Neutrality.
In this
interactive and thought-provoking session we will explore the
environment in which these voluntary markets operate, and learn
about the issues that arise in the creation of and purchasing of
offsets. Questions such as "what is carbon
neutral?", "what is a robust offset?", "what am I buying?",
"how is it verified?", "does it meet a standard?", "is my
reputation at risk?" will all be explored. We will also
touch upon the current ACCC investigation into environmental
claims, and set out a path that is best for companies and
individuals to follow as they navigate this market.
